Days 2-4 – Medical Brigade

Rejuvenated and inspired from the day of preparation, the team made the bumpy two-hour bus ride to the first community to run a medical clinic with three physicians and a gynecologist.  Having received our assignments the previous night, we began setting up the doctor’s rooms and triaging stations upon arrival.  Already, there was a line of about 100 people waiting to be seen.  Those of us stationed to triage first were extremely nervous due to the language barrier.  Despite studying the packet of terms given to us prior to our trip, very few of us were fluent in Spanish, and anxious about communicating with our patients.  With much relief, the patients were all surprisingly patient and kind, occasionally giggling with us when we struggled to pronounce words correctly.
